Since I'm trying to get into this walking thing I've been looking at a lot of maps online. I found this new really cool tool. It let's me map my route and tells me the distance I'm walking.
The site is: Map My Walk
I use the box on the left to enter my address and it pulls up a map of my area. Then I click on the right arrow button and then click the map, and that sets my starting point. From there just click where you want to walk. You can tell it follow the roads, or not, if you're walking through a park or somewhere without roads. It uses a mapping feature, like google maps or mapquest, and adds a twist to it. You can view it as a regular map, as a satellite image, or a combination of both.
Here's a sample map of a 2.83 mile walk to give you an idea of how it works (this is not my city, btw):
